DECUS Training

This module lays the foundation for the whole series. We’ll explore key ideas like colonialism, settler colonialism, and neocolonialism, and introduce decolonisation and decoloniality as living, evolving ways to question how education works.

At the centre is the Coloniality Matrix — power, being, knowledge, gender, and nature — a tool that helps us see how these dimensions shape today’s education systems.

Through a mix of reflection and hands-on activities, participants will connect big concepts to their own experiences. We’ll look at everyday objects through this lens, discuss how education can sometimes act as a “cage” that repeats colonial patterns, and learn to sit with discomfort instead of rushing to easy answers, because that’s where real transformation begins.
